Lignans – for Life

Lignans are polyphenols, natural compounds found in flaxseeds and other plant foods (see below). Lignans have many beneficial effects including helping prevent cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms and diabetes.

Simply eating a regular daily dose of ground flaxseeds can significantly reduce hot flushes, the bane of menopause.  At the same time, ground flaxseeds are a great source of prebiotic fibre, and have shown to reduce insulin resistance, and assist in keeping off extra unwanted kilos.

Foods high in Lignans

Apricots, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, kale), flaxseed, cashews, peanuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, pumpkin seeds, whole grains (barley, oats, rye, whole wheat)
